NBS Role in Green Buildings

Change in the construction industry will involve the energy conservation and environmental impacts of construction. As an active member of the MBMA Energy Committee, Nucor Building Systems is helping create the curve concerning energy efficient buildings. A manufacturer’s ability to design and produce buildings meeting energy criteria could well shape the future of that company and its Builders.

LEED®

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) first launched their LEED program in August 1998 at their Membership Summit. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and provides a benchmark for design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings.

LEED Ratings and Nucor Buildings
These three factors together, allow a Nucor Builder to earn maximum points on projects:
•	NBS buildings, with the exception of the Nucor CFR (and bare RPB), are made from Nucor Steel which is made from scrap. The recycle content of NBS buildings is published at 89% or above.
•	The steel in NBS buildings is recyclable. In other words, if the building were taken out of service, all of the steel could be made into new steel.
•	NBS offers two standard white (SP Polar White or PVDF Regal White) CFR finish options that exceed the LEED Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) requirement of 78. **Note: SRI Information for NBS colors is included on both the SP and PVDF Color charts.

The LEED Rating System rates the aggregate system of the building and individual components of the building do not, by themselves earn points. However, the following chart shows how products provided by Nucor Building Systems contribute to earning LEED points:
